Bella – Blue and Gold Macaw
Posted on August 19th, 2009 9 commentsBella is a female blue and gold macaw and is approximately 6 yrs old. She came in with Rocky the Catalina from the same rescuer. Here is what I recieved from her rescuer.
“i was told bella was 6 years old, was a pet, then the owner decided they did not want her and they sold her, this person put her in a breeding program, bella was with 2 male mccaw, because he though that she will like one but it became a competition between the two males, they were very mean to her, after unsuccessful breeding he gave her to this store”
Bella is very underweight and bald to the skin and nervous right now. We will be working on all these issues to get her healthy and happy again. We are waiting on some test results from her vet to help us determine the best course of action for Bella at this time.

Rocky – Catalina Macaw
Posted on August 19th, 2009 21 commentsRocky is a Catalina Macaw (sorry there is no wiki as this is a cross breed between a blue and gold macaw and a scarlet). Rocky started her life as a pet but at some point the owners put her into a breeding program. When she was unsucceessful at breeding, (the breeder did not DNA her and put her in with another female) she was abused by the breeder and eventually sold to a petstore. She was then purchased by a rescuer who tried to help Rocky as best as she could. She realized Rocky required more work than she was able to give, she contacted us to help Rocky. She is partially plucked on the chest area but we are hopeful we can feather her up again. She also has a ruptured air sac which is a common affliction for macaws where their neck area puffs out a bit when the birds are excited but goes back to normal when they relax. It does not harm them and surgery for repairing this is only done in the worst cases. She was DNA’s and it was found at this point she was a female. She seems to prefer men and was quite talkative with my husband last night and was giving him kisses and dancing. We feel she will come around rather quickly and will be working on diet and feathering for her.

Plucky – Yellow Collar Macaw
Posted on May 19th, 2009 17 commentsHe is a DNA’d male. 19 yrs old. Due to a crisis, he is now in need of a new home. He is presently still with the owner and we are trying to help him find a new home. There is some urgency to help him out. UPDATE Plucky is now here at the rescue and we have had the opportunity to spend some time with him and assess him. He is plucked around his neck and shoulders. There is a good chance that he could regain his feathers as his living conditions were not well suited to him.

Rocky – Blue and Gold Macaw
Posted on April 1st, 2009 8 commentsRocky has had a very sad life so far. We rescued him from what appeared to be a drug house. He was left alone for months at a time while the owner would be hospitalized with a neighbor providing food and water. The conditions of the home were beyond disgusting with 11 cats also in the home. Presently he is plucked on his lower body. We are hoping we can help him recover from all his traumas and find him a wonderful home where he will never be neglected again. He is approximately 6 years old. So far he has said hello. He eats well as the neighbour was giving him fresh fruits as well as seed. We are working on his diet to get him on to a good parrot mix and on any behaviour issues he may have. We were told that Rocky is female but have no way of determining that. **Update – we are noticing some new feather growth on Rocky, she’s started speaking more and is now stepping up willingly and calling for us when she wants some attention. She is good with the other birds.

Spike – Blue and Gold Macaw

Blue and Gold Macaw
Spike came to us as a baby.Spike has scissor beak and had his scull crushed in an attempt to repair his beak by his breeder. He is doing wonderfully now. However he requires regular beak work to keep it from getting worse. Luckily there was no brain damage. Due to constant medical attention Spike will not be available for adoption.
